A twist to your waffle charts

This week I was playing on building some out-of-the-box visualizations and I found a neat way to add an interesting finishing touch to a waffle chart.

To build the waffle I recommend Andy Kriebel’s Tableau Tip Tuesday video. Once you are with your chart ready you can then follow these steps to make it shine a little more:

0| Andy’s final chart looks plain and nice like this (without the label)

1| My first tip is on the Size card. Make sure your chart is using the max size available:

2| Now make sure that on Color card you have the border in white

3| Next, right-click on the waffle and select Format… Go to the Format Borders tab and make sure your Row Dividers have “None” for both Pane and Header. Then you can select a gray border for the Column Dividers:

4| Go back to your waffle and you will notice some nice effect. The waffle now looks like a kitchen title with a nice and well finished grouting:

5| You can then float this into a dashboard and I recommend setting both width and height of the object at 250px.

Let’s compare the before and after of this “waffle renovation” project:

I hope this kind of silly tip can help you on adding a bit of flavor on your data waffles.
